Carnival in St Lucia

Carnival is an annual celebration of life found in many countries around the globe. St Lucia's own carnival, with its hallmark mixture of sequins and soca ,is quite the party indeed which starts in July.

The preparations however can begin months in advance . Groups call "mas bands" work together in secret camps to prepare an awesome spectacle of costumes and music. The elaborate and brightly coloured masquerade costumes can takes weeks to prepare, with individual sequins hand applied with the greatest care. When the parade day finally arrives, the mas bands unveil their creations and compete for the title of king and queen of the bands, as well as band of the year.

Calypso ,soca and steel band competitions are also held on the weekend ,providing an invigorating soundtrack to festivities. During the height of carnival, Castries is transformed into a massive street party, with enough music, food and drink to keep the celebrations going all nigh long.

Carnival celebrations take place during the entire month, but eventually culminate in one massive party.
